Sustainability in Formula E

How organizations communicate their sustainability initiatives can provide insights into their strategies, successes, and shortcomings. Previous research has not examined a single organization's sustainability reporting over a long period of time to see how it has evolved. This is particularly interesting due to the choice of Formula E for analysis as it was established to be a sustainable sport enterprise rather than an already-existing sport enterprise that tries to integrate sustainability into existing operations. In this study, eight seasons of Formula E's annual sustainability reports were collected and read for their content, structure, and linearity. Findings suggest that Formula E were inconsistent with their structure, language, scope, and focus season to season, but had moments of both progression and regression with time. This is to be expected as sustainability is not a goal with a clear finish line, but more of a continuous pursuit. Future managers might want to consider greater coordination of these efforts to achieve greater strategic success and recognition.
