Professional sport facilities serve as pivotal symbols of societal values and sustainability efforts, impacting both team identities and revenue streams. Through the lens of diffusion of innovations theory, this study examined 175 professional sport stadia across the United States and Canada to gauge the pace of renewable energy adoption and the driving factors behind it.
Findings indicated that nearly half of the facilities had embraced at least one renewable energy source, with solar leading the pack. While full adoption was projected for 2061, certain sources like wind showed slower uptake. Factors like new stadium construction and regional social systems played crucial roles in accelerating early adoption, highlighting the intricate dynamics between sports, sustainability, and societal progress.
